Geotechnical Engineering is a branch of civil engineering which deals with the study and behavior of earth materials which includes soil, rock and ground water. It includes the study of soil and rock layers that are building block of earth in order to determine their physical and chemical properties. By the help of this information the professionals design foundations and earthwork structures for buildings, roads, dams, bridges, embankments, cuts, dikes, levees, reservoirs, deposition of hazardous wastes, sanitary landfills, channels, retaining walls, anchors, tunnels and all other structures directly interacting with the subsoil, both onshore and offshore.

In addition to participating in the design ,construction and operation of most civil engineering projects ,they also deals with various natural hazards that impacts our society, such as, landslides, earthquakes ,soil erosion, sinkholes, soil liquidation, debris flows and rock falls.

Geotechnical engineering is also associated to coastal and ocean engineering, structural engineering, engineering geology, material science and petroleum engineering. It is truly a multi-disciplinary field offering training and research possibilities ranging from material testing and analytical methods to non linear numerical modeling of metaphysics problems.
