Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S)


Bachelor of Dental Surgery is an Undergraduate Academic Degree awarded for a course or program in the field of Dentistry. It is popularly known as B.D.S. which is an abbreviated form of Bachelor of Dental Surgery. Manipal College of Dental Sciences offers the course in the mentioned formats. The course was available with internship before 2007. However, in 2007, the Dental Council of India restructured the course and made it a 5 Year course without Internship. This was done because as per DCI, students or colleges didn't take internship seriously and academicians also felt that internship was not serving its purpose. But, this regulation though under affect, is under consideration

The B.D.S. course is divided into 2 or more semesters. After M.B.B.S., Bachelor of Dental Surgery is one the most sought after degree in the field of medical science. B.D.S. enables one to become a Dentist. Dental Courses comprise didactic lectures, demonstrations, group discussions, seminars, clinical work and conferences. Aspiring candidates learn about different aspects of dental science, which includes various forms of treatment including surgical procedure. Dental materials, Dental anatomy & Oral histology, Oral Pathology, Community Dentistry, Pedodontics, Oral Medicine & Radiology are some of the topics that are generally taught. The basic aim of the curriculum is to produce a dentist who is socially acceptable and is able to work safely and effectively on patients in diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and oral disease.

Basic Eligibility:


  • The person should be a citizen of India and his date of birth should falls on or before 31.12.97 are eligible. Dental School Requirements include H.S.C. (10+2) with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology with at least 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology taken together. Admission to graduate courses in dentistry is through a general, nationwide competitive examination.

  • Entrance Examinations are conducted in major cities all over India. Advertisements are given, regarding issue of Application forms for Common Entrance Examination, important dates etc., in all leading newspapers all over India and also notified. The All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Exam conducted by the CBSE is common for both the M.B.B.S. and the Bachelor of Dental Sciences (BDS). The allocation of institutions is based on merit. Other than the centrally run medical institutions there is at least one dental college in most states, where admission is governed by domiciliary status. But to be eligible for practice, one must ensure that the course chosen is approved by the Dental Council of India.

Course Duration:The course duration for the program is for 5 Years.

Admission process:

Admissions are provided based on the score that the candidate has earned in the entrance exam. For the BDS course, candidates have to appear for the entrance exam, after that they will be allotted a seat in the institution or university. Application forms are available online, and candidates can fill the forms on the notified date to sit for the entrance exam.

The entrance exam is called NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test) and comprises subjects like physics, chemistry, botany and zoology. There are objective type questions and negative marking for every wrong answer.

Master of Dental Surgery (M.D.S)


Master of Dental Surgery is a Postgraduate Academic Degree which is awarded for a course or program in Dentistry. It is also known as M.D.S. which is an abbreviated form of Masters Degree in Dentistry. The programmes foster development of critical analysis, research skills, and advanced clinical skills that will be recognized for specialist registration. M.D.S. Dental Degree Course enables one to become a registered Dental Specialist. The Course structure fosters development of critical analysis, research skills, and advanced clinical skills that will be recognized for specialist registration. Dental Council of India (D.C.I) is the regulatory body for Dental courses. Dental Schools provides graduates, training in different disciplines in Dentistry. M.D.S. degree is conferred after acceptance of a thesis and after the candidate has passed the M.D.S. examination which is held at the end of 30 months which consists of 4 written papers, clinical (or practical) and oral examinations.


Eligibility:


  • The minimum qualification for this course is Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S) or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Dental Council of India. Candidate not possessing a recognized Dental qualification for the above purpose should secure the prior approval of his qualifications by the Dental Council of India before he can be admitted to the M.D.S. course of any University in India. The Age Limit is mostly 21 years of age.

  • The candidate should have completed B.D.S with 50% marks. It is also necessary that the candidate has completed 12 months of internship from recognized dental colleges. Those who have complete internship by the mentioned date can take the entrance test. The selection of students to M.D.S. is based on the merit of the candidate and for the determination of merit All India Common Entrance Test (AICET) is conducted by various Dental Colleges or by the agency specified by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi

Course duration: The course duration for the program is for 3 Years.

Admission process:

For M.D.S also, there is an entrance exam, which can be taken only after completing B.D.S. The M.D.S entrance test is of three hours and comprises 200 objective type questions. The subjects are basic sciences, clinical and para-clinical subjects, etc. There will also be negative marking for every wrong answer.
