What is Difference between Civil Engineering or Architecture

Architecture and civil engineering go hand in hand. Without one, the other's job seems to be incomplete. Engineering is not a standalone job. A civil engineer builds the building by applying its logic to strengthen the structure, while the architect tries to give it artistic look. Engineers do one part of work while architects completes by doing the other part. But in reality the work of civil engineers is lot tougher than that of an architect. Architects are concerned about scheming and managing spaces in the structure while engineers are concerned about managing the forces that will finally built up structure.

Civil engineering: this course is achieved by giving entrance exams for engineering studies such as AIEEE, IIT or other state level exams. You obtain a B.Tech degree if you go for this course. This subject mainly fulfills the primary needs of humans that are buildings or shelter. It is concerned with planning, construction and operation of building and housing systems. Students are even taught about developing building that would even resist any natural disaster.

Opportunities: after doing this you can pursue the course of post graduation in hydraulics, structural engineering and transportation or else the doors of lectureship are always there as an alternative. Besides this you can work in different firms and take contracts to build structure, buildings, raods etc. There is a great oppurtunity for civil engineers to get absorbed in both the public and private sector. For entry to post graduation course you should crack the GATE exams but some institutes conduct their own exams.

Eligibility: you need to have passed 12 th with at least 50% marks along with subject combination of chemistry, physics and mathematics. You need to appear for competitive exams such as AIEEE, IIT and state level engineering entrance exams to get admission in different institutes for this course.

Top colleges that gives this course:

NIT's and IIT's are the finest colleges which provide good situations in Civil   Engineering in India

  • Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
  • Indian Institute of Technology, roorkee
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
  • Indian Institute Of Technology Guwahati
  • IIIT Allahabad
  • Anna University, Chennai
  • National Institute of Technology, Trichy
  • BITS Pilani, Pilani
  • Jadavpur University , Faculty of Engg & Tech Calcutta
  • NIT- National Institute of Technology Warangal   Delhi College of Engineering
  • Punjab Engineering College
  • NIT- National Institute of Technology Suratkal.

Architecture: this course deals with the designing of the structures taking in mind the space provided for construction. An architect tries to give a creative and aesthetic look to the structure. This is an undergraduate course of 5 years duration but here the mathematical concepts are less implemented. In architecture you should have creative thinking and also good at drawing.

Opportunities: after getting this degree one can register in the council of architecture. Many government and private firms hire architects to give authenticity to the building or structure that they want to construct. In simple words the work of an architect is to prepare blueprints of the structure or the building.

Eligibility: you should have passed 12 th with minimum 50% marks having the subject combination of chemistry, physics and mathematics. Several entrance exams are conducted such as AIEEE, NATA and IIT and other state level exams sre conducted to get admission to this course. You get the degree of B. Arch after completing this course.

Some top institutes for B.Arch study:

  1. School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi
  2. Department of Architecture & Planning, IIT Roorkee
  3. CEPT, Ahmedabad
  4. Sir JJ  College of Architecture , Mumbai
  5. Dept of Architecture, IIT Kharagpur
  6. Dept of Architecture, BIT Mesra, Ranchi
  7. Chandigarh   College of Architecture,   Chandigarh
  8. Faculty of Architecture and Ekistics, Jamia
  9. Dept of Architecture, NIT Tiruchirapalli
  10. Dept of Architecture, NIT Calicut

Comparison between these two courses:

B.Tech(Civil engineering)

B.Arch(architecture)

Deals with control of forces.

Deals with control of spaces.

Builds the structure

Designs the structure

Tries to give more durability to the structure

Tries to give aesthetic appearance to it.

It is 4 years course

It is 5 years course.

Civil engineer constructs dams, buildings, houses, roads, flyover etc.

Designs the structure of road, houses, buildings that are to design the blueprint.

It is mainly field work

It is mainly paper work

Concernedness with materials and strength of the structure.

Concerned with designing of spaces and shape in that building.
